Providence Players is casting 8 performers (4 men and 4 women) to cover 4 principal roles and various ensemble roles in the musical I Love You Because. The 4 principal characters, all in their mid- to late-20s, are 2 brothers and the women they may be in love with. The ensemble performers will also understudy the principals.

No roles are precast and all roles are open. All backgrounds and ethnicities are welcome and encouraged to audition.

Providence Players of Fairfax is:

  • A non-profit community theater troupe. All participation is on a volunteer basis. No members of the cast or crew are compensated.
  • A membership organization. Membership is not required to audition. If cast, all actors (and in fact, all volunteers), are required to become members of Providence Players of Fairfax ($25 per individual or $60 per family – three or more) for the season (if not already a member).

Callbacks (by invitation only) will be held 10:00 am – 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 21, 2026.

If you are unable to fill out the online form, please email info@providenceplayers.org to RSVP and fill out and print this paper form and bring it with you to the audition.

Resumes and headshots will be accepted but are not required. We may ask to take a picture of you, but this is for internal use only and will not be shared.

Actors who audition one night may be asked to come back a second night, if available. You are not required to be available multiple evenings to be considered. The Director reserves the right to extend the audition period pending initial audition response.

Audition Process & Sides

Sign up for one of the available 30-minute time slots. Walk-ins will be accommodated as time permits.

Auditioners should prepare 16-32 bars of a musical theater song, not from this show, that best showcases your vocal and acting ability. Please bring sheet music in the correct key. No recorded music or a cappella auditions.

  • Jeff Bennet: male, 28, pedi-cab driver, Austin’s brother/roommate, Diana’s love interest; bari-tenor to G (optional A)
  • Marcy Fitzwilliams: female, 24, free-spirited photographer, Austin’s love interest; Soprano, strong mix to F, belt to D
  • Diana Bingley: female, 27, actuary, Marcy’s roommate, Jeff’s love interest; Alto to D
  • Bartender: male, 25-35, appears throughout the show with cocktail waitress, gives love advice to couples; will understudy Austin or Jeff
  • Cocktail waitress: female, 25-35, appears throughout the show with bartender, gives love advice to couples; will understudy either Marcy or Diana
  • NYC Man: male, 25-35, plays multiple roles throughout the show – barista, waiter, landlord, food delivery guy; will understudy either Austin or Jeff

Synopsis

I Love You Because is a charming, modern-day musical reimagining of Price and Prejudice, set against the backdrop of bustling New York City. This witty and heartfelt musical follows an uptight, rule-bound greeting card writer whose life is changed when he meets a flighty photographer. Along with their eccentric friends and siblings, they learn to love each other, not in spite of their faults, but because of them.

Rehearsals

Download a copy of the I Love You Because Theater Access Calendar for this show. This is NOT the specific rehearsal schedule (which will be supplied by the Stage Manager), but it will give you an idea for the commitment you are making in terms of rehearsals and performances, and how to identify conflicts.

In addition to the stage rehearsal schedule, cast readings of the play and some selected scene study and character work may be scheduled based on actor availability prior to the stage schedule. The schedule for these rehearsals will be finalized soon after casting. Unless indicated otherwise, all rehearsals will happen at the James Lee Community Center. Rehearsals will be held in the evenings from roughly 6:30/6:45 to 9:45 pm usually two to three weeknights and Saturday afternoons. There will likely be more rehearsal dates the closer it gets to opening.

Please come to auditions prepared to list any availability conflicts with rehearsal or the performance schedule. Space is provided on the audition form for this purpose.
